Book Temptation Description/Summary:

A Dickensian coming-of-age tale about poverty, sex, World War I, and the darker side of human nature as seen through the eyes of a lobby boy in a Budapest hotel. Temptation is a rediscovered masterwork of twentieth-century fiction, a Dickensian tale of a young man coming of age in Budapest between the wars. Illegitimate and unwanted, Béla is packed off to the country to be looked after by a peasant woman the moment he is born. She starves and bullies him, and keeps him out of school. He does his best to hold his own, and eventually his mother brings him back to live with her in the city. In thrall to his feckless father, Mishka, and living in a crowded tenement, she works her fingers to the bone, while Béla shares a room with a hardworking prostitute. Finally, Béla secures a job in a fancy hotel. Though exhausted by endless work, he is fascinated by the upper-crust world that his new job exposes him to; soon he is embroiled with a rich, damaged, and dangerous woman. The atmosphere of Budapest is increasingly poisoned by the appeal of fascism, while Béla grows ever more aware of how power and money keep down the working classes. In the end, with all the odds still against him, he musters the resolve to set sail for new future.

Book Temptation Description/Summary:

In his most challenging work to date, Czech playwright Vaclav Havel has given the Faust legend a provocative twist. His setting is 'the Institute, ' whose mission is to combat the 'irrational tendencies' in society through its scientific work. Personal and professional relationships at this 'lighthouse of truthful knowledge' are a tissue of lies and sycophancy in which all concerned willingly collude.

Book Fear and Temptation Description/Summary:

Goldie skillfully reveals the ambivalence of white writers to indigenous culture through an examination of the stereotyping involved in the creation of the image of the "Other." The treacherous "redskin" and the "Indian maiden," embodiments of violence and sex, also evoke emotional signs of fear and temptation, of white repulsion from and attraction to the indigene and the land. Goldie suggests that white culture, deeply attracted to the impossible idea of becoming indigenous, either rejects native land claims and denies recognition of the original indigenes, or incorporates these claims into white assertions of native status. After comparing the works of Canadian author Rudy Wiebe and Australian author Patrick White, Goldie concludes by linking the results of his literary analysis to wider cultural concerns, particularly land rights. He shows that literary views of natives, both positive and negative, emphasize the same charac-teristics and he suggests that escape from this limited vision may open the door to solving the problems of native sovereignty.

Book Temptation Description/Summary:

✔️Sexy Playboy ✔️Nerdy Girl ✔️One Large Bed I'm used to taking what I want, being the best at what I do. During the day, I make big bucks as New York's premiere consultant. At night, I can get any girl I lay my eyes on. I thought this life was what I wanted: working hard and playing harder--with penthouse apartments, luxury cars and bottle service every weekend. After six years in the city, I know I've been living like a monster for too long. I need to get my act together. I need to find something real. I need to come home. LA means family and a fresh start. My parents and my friends who are close enough to be siblings. And Melina. Melina is nerdy smart, with a challenging sense of humor and legs for miles. It's so hard to describe her...enigmatically beautiful. I’m sure there’s a word for it in French. But I know there's a naughty girl hiding behind that shy smile that I'm dying to drag out. There was always something between us. I never forgot her laugh, never could get her off my mind. Nobody ever seemed to notice how my body would react when I was near Melina, how much more focused I became—maybe not even Melina herself. But this time it’s different. The more time we spend together, the more I wonder if there was something there all along. After so long in the fast lane, I don't know if I can handle settling down. But seeing Melina's passion, I'm tempted beyond belief. I have to admit it: this temptation is impossible to resist.

Book Temptation Description/Summary:

"A Dickensian coming-of-age tale about poverty, sex, World War I, and the darker side of human nature as seen through the eyes of a lobby boy in a Budapest hotel. Abject poverty is an unusual subject for the novel, but it is at the center of John Szekely's Dickensian tale of a young man coming of age in Budapest between the wars. Illegitimate and unwanted, Bela is no sooner born than his mother packs him off to the country to be looked after by a peasant woman; when she stops paying her son's keep, he is systematically starved, as well as ostracized, bullied, and kept out of school. He does his best to hold his own, but it is years before his mother comes for him and brings him back to live with her in the city. There she remains in thrall of his feckless father, Mishka, who comes and goes until at last, once and for all, he is gone, even as she works her fingers to the bone and leaves Bela to share his room with a hardworking prostitute. Living in a crowded tenement, whose various inhabitants Szekely depicts with relish, Bela secures a job in a fancy hotel and scrapes up the money to put a down payment on a uniform. He must rise well before dawn to get to work and work until the early hours, which leave him as exhausted as he is famished, even as he is fascinated by the world of the uppercrust that his new job exposes him to; soon he is embroiled with a rich, damaged, and dangerous woman. The atmosphere of Budapest is increasingly poisoned by the appeal of fascism, while Bela grows ever more aware of how power and money keep down the working classes. In the end, with every odd still against him, he musters the resolve to set sail for new future. Temptation is a wonderfully vivid and utterly captivating rediscovered masterwork of twentieth-century fiction"--
