Where should I inhale or exhale while passing sidewalk garbage? How long should I honk my horn? If New York were a game show, how would I win? What happens when I stand in the bike lane? Book The Planet Factory Description/Summary:

Twenty years ago, the search for planets outside the Solar System was a job restricted to science-fiction writers. Now it's one of the fastest-growing fields in astronomy with thousands of exoplanets discovered to date, and the number is rising fast. These new-found worlds are more alien than anything in fiction. Planets larger than Jupiter with years lasting a week; others with two suns lighting their skies, or with no sun at all. Planets with diamond mantles supporting oceans of tar; possible Earth-sized worlds with split hemispheres of perpetual day and night; waterworlds drowning under global oceans and volcanic lava planets awash with seas of magma. The discovery of this diversity is just the beginning. There is a whole galaxy of possibilities. The Planet Factory tells the story of these exoplanets. Each planetary system is different, but in the beginning most if not all young stars are circled by clouds of dust, specks that come together in a violent building project that can form colossal worlds hundreds of times the size of the Earth. The changing orbits of young planets risk dooming any life evolving on neighbouring worlds or, alternatively, can deliver the key ingredients needed to seed its beginnings. Planet formation is one of the greatest construction schemes in the Universe, and it occurred around nearly every star you see. Each results in an alien landscape, but is it possible that one of these could be like our own home world?

Book Click-Click Description/Summary:

What does it really mean to be an alien in America? Aging hipsters Linda and Gordon Alexander thought they knew as they struggled to make a living in the art and music-filled counter-cultural shadows. The siblings soon gain a completely different perspective when they conceal a hermaphroditic extraterrestrial in their urban Chicago home. The extraterrestrial and the Alexanders find a way to communicate by sharing detailed telepathic images of critical life experiences. The extraterrestrial learns about childhood tragedies, first loves, and the peculiarities of human gender, while the Alexanders learn how massive environmental damage on the stranger's planet forced some of the people onto a sterile moon where food is scarce, population growth is strictly controlled, and returning home in their orb-shaped spaceships is forbidden. Despite being from radically different worlds they soon discover there might be some cultural universals after all. In addition to the quirky plot and edgy characters, CLICK-CLICK gently addresses issues of gender diversity, environmental destruction, and socioeconomic class from Linda's conflicted urbanite point of view.

Book A Christmas Fairy and Other Stories Description/Summary:

John Strange Winter was the pen-name of Henrietta Eliza Vaughan Stannard (1856-1911), an English novelist. She began early to write fiction for different magazines, producing sentimental stories, chiefly of army life. She became a prolific novelist, producing some sixty other light and amusing books, the best of which deal with military life. Frances Elizabeth Crompton (1866-1952) was the author of: Friday's Child (1889), Master Bartelmy (1892), The Gentle Heritage (1893) and The Green Garland. Mary Louisa Molesworth (1839-1921) was a Scottish writer. Her first novels, Lover and Husband (1869) and To Cicely (1874), appeared under the pseudonym of Ennis Graham. She typified late Victorian writing for girls. Aimed at girls too old for fairies and princesses but too young for Austen and the Bronts, books by Molesworth had their share of amusement, but they also had a good deal of moral instruction.

Book First Contact Description/Summary:

Twenty ships have left the gravitational field of the Earth with the intention of colonizing Mars. Each is independent of the other and set to become domed cities upon landing. The mission is simple: go forth to develop the new planet, make it an extension of our home. Well, it sounded simple. No one expected life on Mars to be easy, they are pioneers and that is a type of life that comes with dangers. What they didn't expect was for the settings of one of the ships to be off enough to miss their landing, to miss the very planet they were meant to settle. Even more astounding was to find another planet within a three-week travel period that lies in the shadow of the red planet. It is where they will land, where their ship will unfold to become a domed city. Where life is dangerous in a hostile land and they find unexpected help. The indigenous winged people of the planet don't live on the surface of the planet, they live in cities in the clouds, but they are willing to extend a welcoming hand to those who have come to their land, as well as teach them what they can to survive. Their relationship begins with three words. “Welcome to Tantalus.”

Book The Blue Planet Description/Summary:

"The Blue Planet: Informal International Police Networks and National Intelligence," makes a powerful argument for why the United States needs to make better use of its federal law enforcement agencies abroad as an integral part of our national counterterrorism strategy. Bayer's book criticizes the primacy of the military/intelligence model in our foreign counterintelligence strategy, arguing that the counterterrorism role reserved for the FBI makes insufficient use of the global networking capabilities of our many other American law enforcement agencies abroad. Bayer's book makes an important contribution to the literature on international governmental networks describing the unique ability that informal networks of cooperating law enforcement agencies have to collect information about local conditions and local communities that may prove crucial in identifying terrorist threats and preventing terrorist attacks. Bayer argues that such networks have proven immensely successful in investigating organized crime, but that these capabilities have been underused against international terrorist networks. By virtue of their omnipresence around the globe, police are "natural anticipatory collectors" of vast amounts of information. They are for that reason well-placed to detect suspicious activities-particularly given the overlap between terrorist cells and criminal networks. Law enforcement personnel have a unique ability to draw on trust and a common culture with their counterparts in other countries, resulting in a regular informal interchange of useful information. Bayer recognizes the particular advantage that the police enjoy by virtue of their professional autonomy and relative independence from the centers of political decision-making. The same forces that insulate them politically facilitate close, albeit informal, cooperation between law enforcement agencies from such vastly different legal systems as those of the United States, Cuba, China, and Indonesia. Informal police cooperation thrives because it benefits not only powerful countries like the United States, which depend on information flows from a large variety of cooperating countries, but also relatively weak police entities seeking to increase their professionalism and autonomy from their own political centers. Given their special access to sources of intelligence not easily exploitable by the intelligence establishment, law enforcement agencies could play a much more important role than they currently do as full partners in a comprehensive American counterterrorism strategy.

Book The Last Navigator Description/Summary:

The ancient history of whales is rich with ancestral tales of superior wisdom, prehistoric tradition, and unending love. During the cold seasons, the pods would gather around the Pacific islands where the elders would perform this history for the young. Through haunting songs and fluid dances, stories were told of the valor of warriors, the triumph of great chiefs, and the celestial songs of a mythical tribe of whales called the Navigators. According to tradition, females are prohibited from becoming Navigators but Lani, a young, vivacious female whale, is curious to learn more. Against the will of her elders, she attempts to satisfy her inquisitive mind by seeking out a mysterious old whale rumored to have a connection with the Navigators. What she learns is more than she bargained for. Lani leaves behind her friends, her family, and her duties as a female and sets out on a quest for knowledge and truth. On her journey through the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, she discovers her destiny and changes the history of whales forevermore. A story of strength, self-discovery, love, and legacy, The Last Navigator resonates with anyone who has ever desired to know more or become more in life.
