Book The Sacred and the Sinister Description/Summary:
Inspired by the work of eminent scholar Richard Kieckhefer, The Sacred and the Sinister explores the ambiguities that made (and make) medieval religion and magic so difficult to differentiate. The essays in this collection investigate how the holy and unholy were distinguished in medieval Europe, where their characteristics diverged, and the implications of that deviation. In the Middle Ages, the natural world was understood as divinely created and infused with mysterious power. This world was accessible to human knowledge and susceptible to human manipulation through three modes of engagement: religion, magic, and science. How these ways of understanding developed in light of modern notions of rationality is an important element of ongoing scholarly conversation. As Kieckhefer has emphasized, ambiguity and ambivalence characterize medieval understandings of the divine and demonic powers at work in the world. The ten chapters in this volume focus on four main aspects of this assertion: the cult of the saints, contested devotional relationships and practices, unsettled judgments between magic and religion, and inconclusive distinctions between magic and science. Freshly insightful, this study of ambiguity between magic and religion will be of special interest to scholars in the fields of medieval studies, religious studies, European history, and the history of science. In addition to the editor, the contributors to this volume are Michael D. Bailey, Kristi Woodward Bain, Maeve B. Callan, Elizabeth Casteen, Claire Fanger, Sean L. Field, Anne M. Koenig, Katelyn Mesler, and Sophie Page.
Brystal and her friends have saved the world from the evil Snow Queen and secured worldwide acceptance for the magical community. But in this magical series, their journey is just beginning . . . When a mysterious new witch arrives at the academy, the celebrations are cut short. As the witch begins recruiting faeries into her rival school of witchcraft, it becomes clear she has dark intentions. And soon Brystal's friend Lucy becomes embroiled in an ominous plot against mankind. Elsewhere, the fragile peace is on the brink of shattering. Outrage has spread throughout the kingdoms in opposition to the legalization of magic. And, a dangerous and centuries-old clan known as the Righteous Brotherhood has resurfaced, with one goal in mind: to exterminate all magical life forever . . . starting with Brystal. The enchanting sequel to the New York Times bestselling A Tale of Magic... is filled with brand-new adventures and a cast of memorable characters, both familiar and new.
If you think having one dragon around messes up your life, imagine what it's like when a second one shows up. I'm Val Thorvald, assassin of magical bad guys and tenuous ally to the dragon lord Zav. He still calls me a mongrel and thinks I'm a criminal, but he healed my wounds after we fought those dark elves together. That's progress, right? Maybe one day, he'll deign to use my name. Not that this is my primary concern. I'm busy with a new assignment. Nin, the awesome lady who makes my magical weapons, has a werewolf problem. Specifically, sleazy loser werewolf competitors who want to drive her out of business. Or worse. Normally, a couple of werewolves wouldn't be a big deal, but these ones have powerful allies. And then there's that new dragon. It turns out he's one of Zav's enemies, and he wants to use me against him. I don't know why he's picking on me--it's not like I mean something to Zav--but somehow I've gotten stuck in the middle of dragon politics. If you think that sounds like a nightmare, you're right. If I can't figure out a way to help my friend with the werewolves while keeping these dragons from tearing me apart, we're both going to end up flatter than the deck chairs when Zav lands on the roof of my apartment building.
Loner Vivi Deveraux is thrilled to join Westerly College's Kappas, who are secretly witches, until she meets perfect, polished Scarlett Winter, who will stop at nothing to be the sorority's next president.
Dealing with dragons is hard. Dealing with a teenage daughter is even harder. My new mission involves both. Weird things are happening in Northern Idaho, and my boss is sending me to investigate. Unfortunately, my daughter and ex-husband are vacationing in the town that's at the center of the trouble. Coincidence? Or is someone targeting them to get at me? I'm a wanted woman right now. Not only by the criminal werewolves, orcs, and trolls that I'm often hired to kill. But by the Dragon Justice Court. An organization full of arrogant, powerful dragons is exactly as horrible as it sounds. They're the last beings you'd want after your family. If I can't get to the bottom of the mystery and convince the dragons I'm not their enemy, I stand to lose far more than my own life.
David Baldacci is back with The Keeper, the follow up to his instant #1 global bestseller and award-winning YA fantasy debut The Finisher. Vega Jane was always told no one could leave the town of Wormwood. She was told there was nothing outside but the Quag, a wilderness filled with danger and death. And she believed it - until the night she stumbled across a secret that proved that everything she knew was a lie. Now Vega and her best friend Delph must find a way to make it across this terrifying land of bloodthirsty creatures and sinister magic. But the Quag is worse than Vega Jane's darkest imagining. It's a living, breathing prison designed to keep enemies out and the villagers of Wormwood in. The Quag will throw everything at Vega. It will try to break her. It will try to kill her. And survival might come at a price not even Vega is willing to pay. Master storyteller David Baldacci unleashes a hurricane of action and adrenalin that takes readers to breaking point in this second instalment in the Vega Jane series.
Dragons make life complicated. Extremely complicated. After returning from Idaho, I was hoping to have time to figure things out with Zav-also known as Lord Zavryd, the dragon who claimed me as his mate without asking-but the dark elves are up to their old tricks again.Actually, they're up to far more deadly tricks, using more powerful magic than I knew existed. I have no idea how I'm going to stop them, but if I can't, my entire city and everybody I care about could be obliterated. To make matters worse, Zav's sister has shown up and is rooting around in my life. His family doesn't approve of me, and she plans to put an end to our relationship... one way or another.
