Book Restless Description/Summary:

Do You Feel Like You're Missing Something? Jennie Allen, founder of If: Gathering, directs you on how to find the best way to use your spiritual gifts. What if this feeling wasn’t a bad thing? It could be a longing for more of God and a catalyst to living the life that was designed before the foundations of the earth were laid. A lot of us, if we’re honest, are afraid. We hold our dreams close to our chest. But our passions have a purpose—they were engineered for God’s greater plan and he intends for us to use them for his glory and purposes. In Restless, Bible teacher and fellow struggler Jennie Allen explores practical ways to identify the threads of your life and how to intentionally weave them together. She explains how your gifts, passions, places, and relationships aren’t random; they’re deliberate and meaningful. And your suffering—it’s possible it has produced the very thing you want to give back to the world. Using the story of Joseph, the dreamer, Jennie explains how his suffering, gifts, relationships—all of the threads of his life—fit into the greater story of God and how our stories can do the same. What would happen if God got bigger than your fear and insecurity, and you spent the rest of your life running without reservation after his purposes for you? You were created for more. To dive deeper into the Restless message, additional resources such as a DVD study and leader/participant guide books are available.

Book Thou Shalt Not Be a Jerk Description/Summary:

According to Eugene Cho, Christians should never profess blind loyalty to a party. Any party. But they should engage with politics, because politics inform policies which impact people. In Thou Shalt Not Be a Jerk: A Christian’s Guide to Engaging Politics, Cho encourages readers to remember that hope arrived—not in a politician, system, or great nation—but in the person of Jesus Christ. With determination and heart, Cho urges readers to stop vilifying those they disagree with—especially the vulnerable—and asks Christians to follow Jesus and reflect His teachings. In this book that integrates the pastoral, prophetic, practical, and personal, readers will be inspired to stay engaged, have integrity, listen to the hurting, and vote their convictions. “When we stay in the Scriptures, pray for wisdom, and advocate for the vulnerable, our love for politics, ideology, philosophy, or even theology, stop superseding our love for God and neighbor.”

Is it possible to embrace suffering as a privilege, rather than a punishment? Beloved authors Katherine and Jay Wolf offer readers the bold invitation to trust a known God with an unknown future, as well as practical insights into surviving anything by redefining how we think about everything. There was no going back to normal after such a tragedy. Yet Katherine and Jay learned that suffering is not the end, but rather the beginning of a new story. In Suffer Strong, they invite us into this new story as they share universal lessons and helpful practices that will help us to: Recognize we are being equipped for an uncommon assignment, not cursed by our story. Transform our unmet expectations into brave anticipations. Disrupt the myth that joy can only be found in a pain-free life. Rewrite the narrative of hard circumstances by turning our definitions of suffering into declarations of strength. And, ultimately, thrive even in the lives we never imagined living.

Book Why We Can't Sleep Description/Summary:

When Ada Calhoun found herself in the throes of a midlife crisis, she thought that she had no right to complain. She was married with children and a good career. So why did she feel miserable? And why did it seem that other Generation X women were miserable, too? Calhoun decided to find some answers. She looked into housing costs, HR trends, credit card debt averages, and divorce data. At every turn, she saw a pattern: sandwiched between the Boomers and the Millennials, Gen X women were facing new problems as they entered middle age, problems that were being largely overlooked. Speaking with women across America about their experiences as the generation raised to “have it all,” Calhoun found that most were exhausted, terrified about money, under-employed, and overwhelmed. Instead of their issues being heard, they were told instead to lean in, take “me-time,” or make a chore chart to get their lives and homes in order. In Why We Can’t Sleep, Calhoun opens up the cultural and political contexts of Gen X’s predicament and offers solutions for how to pull oneself out of the abyss—and keep the next generation of women from falling in. The result is reassuring, empowering, and essential reading for all middle-aged women, and anyone who hopes to understand them.

Book Workbook and Summary: Get Out of Your Head Description/Summary:

Cosmic Publications is proud to give all our readers this Workbook Summary of Jennie Allen's Original book "Get out of Your Head". This is an unofficial companion guide and NOT the original Book."Get Out Of Your Head" by Jennie Allen is a powerful book about stopping the negative spirals of anxiety and self-doubt, and learning to take thoughts captive for Christ. This summary goes through each chapter of her book and includes discussion questions and assignments to enrich your learning and the application of her methods to your life.Sample Chapter: Spiraling Out Following her experiment at the speaking engagement, anxiety began to take root in the author's mind. She began to worry about places in her life where things could go wrong, and even worse, she began to doubt God. First, she doubted his love for her, but that quickly turned in to doubting his existence. If God didn't exist, had she been wasting her life believing in him and teaching others about him? The doubt and anxiety would wake her up in the middle of the night. The anxieties and doubts migrated from nighttime to daylight, and suddenly, the author was under attack. The attacks felt real and crippled her, exhausting her to the point of depression. All of her usual methods to get out of a funk no longer worked. The depression overtook her until she felt like there really wasn't a God. She began to actually believe there wasn't a God, and that her life would simply vanish once she died. She was a famous Christian author and speaker. Still, even she couldn't escape the doubts and anxiety that the enemy had sewn. For 18 months, the author struggled with these thoughts of doubt, the depression that followed, and the anxiety over what was real. It seemed like she was always under attack. Then, one day, she realized that her choices played a role in how she was feeling. She could choose to embrace her doubts, or she could choose to overcome them.KEY LESSONLesson: Anxieties and thoughts can feel real if you focus on them and let them take root in you. These thoughts and doubts can lead us down a negative spiral.REFLECTION QUESTIONS1. Have you ever been depressed or anxious? What were some lies you believed during this time?2. Can you relate to the fear of life slipping away?3. What do you think about the author's view that "doubt erases hope"? Is that true?4. Have you doubted God's love for you before? How did it lead to other doubts?5. Have you let any anxieties take root in you?TAKE ACTION:Task: Make a chart. On one side, write your doubts. On the other side, write a corresponding hope, along with a scripture reference that relates to this hope.IN NO WAY IS THIS WORKBOOK SUMMARY ENDORSED OR SPONSORED BY JENNIE ALLEN OR HER PUBLISHER. Book Worthy Description/Summary:

What does the Bible say about the value of women? Does the Bible teach that women are as valuable as men or does it portray them as somehow more flawed, more suspect, or weak and easily deceived? Beginning from Genesis and working all the way through the storyline of the Bible, Worthy demonstrates the significant and yes, even surprising, ways that God has used women to accomplish His kingdom goals. Because, like men, they are created in His image, their lives reflect and declare His worth. Worthy will enable and encourage both men and women to embrace this true and lofty vision of God's creation, plan, and their value in His eyes. Bestselling author Elyse Fitzpatrick and pastor Eric Schumacher together invite women to embrace a transformative and empowering view of their Maker, themselves, and the church. But this isn't only a book for women. It is also a book for men, especially leaders, who want to grow in their understanding of God's perspective on women, people who normally make up the majority of their congregations; men who might be wondering if they've missed something amid the abuse scandals that are rocking the church. Might the headlines they're reading today about abuse have their roots in a denigration of the value and worth of women? Worthy: Celebrating the Value of Women will help every reader see the value, place, and calling of women through study questions and a "Digging Deeper" section that will help men and women discover how to cherish, value, and honor one another for God's glory.

Book Summary of Get Out of Your Head Description/Summary:

Summary of Get Out of Your Head Most people become authors for one of two reasons: Either they know a lot about a subject and want to impart their wisdom, or they don't know anything about a subject and need to learn more about it. Jennie Allen, the author of Get Out Of Your Head, is the latter kind of author. Allen struggled with anxiety and doubt for her entire life. However, she came to the point where she couldn't handle the anxiety and doubt anymore. It negatively affected her well-being and her relationships, but most importantly, her relationship with God. Allen decided that she needed to learn how to take control of her negative thoughts, and fast. She began by learning about the brain and how it works. What she found was that brain chemistry changes with every thought. There is a unique spiral that takes place with thoughts, particularly negative ones. It begins with negative emotions, such as worthlessness. This negative emotion takes root within an individual and leads to a thought. In this example, the thought would be, "I am worthless." That thought, though, is a lie, becomes a lie that we operate from, and it impacts our behavior. We may start to behave as if we truly are worthless. This behavior, then, impacts our relationships with others. Our relationships hurt when we believe we are worthless because our behaviors negatively affect others in our relationships. From there, we suffer the consequences of this spiral. We carry with us our negative thoughts and anxieties. We hear little comments about ourselves, and we internalize them. Instead of calling them the lies they are, we believe them, and we begin to act out of them. We hear someone call us stupid in biology class, and suddenly, we think we're stupid. We take that with us into other classes and work, and it becomes a part of us—even though it was a lie to begin with. The three main lies people believe are that they are unlovable, helpless, or worthless. These impact the daily lives we live and all of our relationships and behaviors. These anxieties and fears begin to feel real if we let them take root. We have to begin to recognize the battle of our thoughts as a spiritual battle. Our thoughts are not unique to us. Our negative thoughts can be the enemy trying to dissuade us away from God. When that happens, we begin to believe the lies He's told us, and we can't act in the truth. To solve this problem, we have to let go of the stronghold the enemy has on us and take our thoughts captive. What we think we become. We don't have to live with these negative thoughts taking control of us. What we think about shapes who we are, but we get to choose. We can decide which thoughts shape us and which thoughts get cast aside. We have the power to stop the downward spiral through redirection—the same way we stop bad behavior from our children. In order to take our thoughts captive, we have to recognize when we have them. One of the ways we can do this is by beginning to capture our negative emotions. When we feel them, we write them down and also write down what is leading us to experience them. Then, we can go through each thought and take it captive. We can pray about it and surrender it to God, then learn to replace it with a positive thought. When we do this, we can defeat the downward spiral. One of the tools the enemy uses is confusion. If he can confuse us by giving us lies and making us believe them, then we are wounded in our fight for Christ. There are quite a few lies that he tells.
