Flesh of My Flesh

Author : Kaja Silverman
Publisher : Stanford University Press
Release : 2009-10-28
Category : Art
ISBN : 9780804773362

Book Flesh of My Flesh Description/Summary:

What is a woman? What is a man? How do they—and how should they—relate to each other? Does our yearning for "wholeness" refer to something real, and if there is a Whole, what is it, and why do we feel so estranged from it? For centuries now, art and literature have increasingly valorized uniqueness and self-sufficiency. The theoreticians who loom so large within contemporary thought also privilege difference over similarity. Silverman reminds us that this is but half the story, and a dangerous half at that, for if we are all individuals, we are doomed to be rivals and enemies. A much older story, one that prevailed through the early modern era, held that likeness or resemblance was what organized the universe, and that everything emerges out of the same flesh. Silverman shows that analogy, so discredited by much of twentieth-century thought, offers a much more promising view of human relations. In the West, the emblematic story of turning away is that of Orpheus and Eurydice, and the heroes of Silverman's sweeping new reading of nineteenth- and twentieth-century culture, the modern heirs to the old, analogical view of the world, also gravitate to this myth. They embrace the correspondences that bind Orpheus to Eurydice and acknowledge their kinship with others past and present. The first half of this book assembles a cast of characters not usually brought together: Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, Marcel Proust, Lou-Andréas Salomé, Romain Rolland, Rainer Maria Rilke, Wilhelm Jensen, and Paula Modersohn-Becker. The second half is devoted to three contemporary artists, whose works we see in a moving new light:Terrence Malick, James Coleman, and Gerhard Richter.

Flesh of My Flesh

Author : Ilana Szobel

Category : Social Science
ISBN : 9781438484570

Book Flesh of My Flesh Description/Summary:

Examines representations of sexual violence in modern Hebrew literature, focusing on the ways in which sexual aggression relates to Zionism, gender, ethnicity, and disability. Flesh of My Flesh looks at one of the most silenced and repressed aspects of Israeli culture by examining the trope of sexual violence in modern Hebrew literature. Ilana Szobel explores how sexual violence participates in, encourages, or resists concurrent ideologies in Jewish and Israeli culture, and situates the rhetoric of sexual aggression within the contexts of gender, ethnicity, disability, and national identity. Focusing on writings of incest survivors, Sepharadi authors, wounded soldiers, and Hebrew authors such as Shoshana Shababo, Gershon Shofman, Hayim Nahman Bialik, Yoram Kaniuk, Amalia Kahana-Carmon, and Tsvia Litevsky, Szobel unveils the various roles of sexual violence in destabilizing hegemonic notions or reinforcing norms and modes of conduct. Thus, while the book looks at poetic and social possibilities of action in relation to sexual violence, it also exposes the Gordian knot of sexualized gender-based violence and the interests of patriarchy, heteronormativity, nationalism, racism, and ableism. Ilana Szobel is Associate Professor of Modern Hebrew Literature on the Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Chair in the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and core faculty in the Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Brandeis University. She is the author of A Poetics of Trauma: The Work of Dahlia Ravikovitch.

My Flesh Is Meat Indeed

Author : Meredith J. C. Warren
Publisher : Fortress Press
Release : 2015-06-01
Category : Religion
ISBN : 9781451496697

Book My Flesh Is Meat Indeed Description/Summary:

In My Flesh Is Meat Indeed, Meredith J. C. Warren shows that the "bread of life" discourse in John 6:51c-58 bears no Eucharistic overtones. Instead, John plays on Mediterranean cultural expectations about the nature of heroic sacrifice and the sacrificial meal that established the identification of a hero with a deity. Warren traces a literary trope in which a hero or heroine'’s antagonistic relationship with a deity is resolved through the hero's sacrifice. Against this milieu, Jesus' insistence that his flesh be eaten demonstrates the Christology of the Gospel.

Stepping Out of My Flesh Into My Faith

Author : Lakeya Lovelace
Publisher : Unknown

Category : Uncategorized
ISBN : 9798726772752

Book Stepping Out of My Flesh Into My Faith Description/Summary:

This book is an in and out dialogue of what I've gone through in my life that wasn't understandable in my eyes and caused me to branch into a new life of faith. God has truly brought me through some times in my life I thought I wouldn't ever get through, let alone overcome. He showed me I have to test my faith and believe in the supernatural in order to live in a stress-free zone. Understand that everyone's faith is different because we have differences of opinion and make our own decision on what or who we believe in. Some people don't choose to believe in Jesus Christ or God. That's your choice. I have very different beliefs within myself. I just want you to know that faith (the belief that it will happen even when you can't see it) can help you get through anything. My flesh and emotions caused me to make drastic decisions. Many of which were unhealthy and toxic. Those times became the cornerstone of anxiety and the foundation of failure in my life. You know you go through things that feel like they will be the death of you. You don't want to go on. Life isn't worth living. How can you make it past this? How can you look others or yourself in the eyes and pretend to be okay when you are having a funeral in your spirit? You have literally started the service. You have placed yourself in the box that has flourished into a beautiful casket. You have the flowers arranged. All of the people who have hurt you have already written their 2-minute remarks, and you've allowed them to be engraved in your heart which has to lead you to your emotional grave. Although you are functioning in the flesh, you are really no longer in existence. The words have been carved in your tombstone. Your plot has been chosen. Your grave has been dug and awaits your body.

Category : Religion
ISBN : 9781434707505

Book Flesh Description/Summary:

Christ’s Body, Human Flesh If we’re honest, no one really cares about theology unless it reveals a gut-level view of God’s presence. According to pastor and ministry leader Hugh Halter, only the incarnational power of Jesus satisfies what we truly crave, and once we taste it, we’re never the same. God understands how hard it is to be human, and the incarnation—God with us—enables us to be fully alive. With refreshing, raw candor, Flesh reveals the faith we all long to experience—one based on the power of Christ in the daily grind of work, home, school, and life. For anyone burned out, disenchanted, or seeking a fresh honest-to-God encounter, Flesh will invigorate your faith.

Author : Tim Cahill
Publisher : Black Swan
Release : 2012
Category : Travelers' writings, American
ISBN : 0552778788

Book Jaguars Ripped My Flesh Description/Summary:

Tim Cahill has clambered up Mount Roraima in the Guyana highlands, searching for the site of Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World. He's dined on baked turtle lung in the desolate northeast of Australia and harvested poisonous sea snakes in the Philippines. He's watched a wrestling match between a shark and an "underwater zombie" during a horror movie shoot off the coast of Mexico. In this classic collection of adventure travel writing, Tim Cahill writes evocatively and often hilariously about these close encounters. He also briefs us on gorilla etiquette, porcupine vendettas, and the loathsome fate awaiting those who disturb ruins in the jungles of the Amazon. JAGUARS RIPPED MY FLESH is an exhilarating roller-coaster of a book, by a writer who gives new meaning to the expression "going to extremes".

Living in the Flesh by the Spirit

Author : Brian H. Thomas
Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
Release : 2020-02-05
Category : Religion
ISBN : 9781532665455

Book Living in the Flesh by the Spirit Description/Summary:

What does Paul mean by “the flesh”? There is a great deal of confusion among laymen and disagreement among scholars on this issue. Christians know that we are supposed to “walk by the Spirit” so that they will not gratify the desires of the flesh, but it is not entirely clear what these expressions mean. Furthermore, Paul can also be confusing when he addresses the Christian’s relationship to the flesh—are we in the flesh or not? This book clarifies these issues for us by exploring the different meanings of “flesh” throughout the Bible, and analyzing the influence both of Old Testament conceptions of “flesh” as well as new salvation-historical realities on Paul’s thinking, especially in the context of the controversy over circumcision in Galatians. By carefully following Paul’s thought, we will also gain greater insight into other Pauline themes that intersect with his theology of the flesh: new creation and his view of this age and the one to come. Most importantly, we will discover Paul’s own program for our spiritual transformation so that we may live a life of Christlike love and service despite the moral weakness of our flesh.

Confessions of the Flesh

Author : Michel Foucault
Publisher : Pantheon
Release : 2021-02-16
Category : Philosophy
ISBN : 9781524748036

Book Confessions of the Flesh Description/Summary:

The fourth and final volume in Michel Foucault's acclaimed History of Sexuality, completed just before his death in 1984 and finally available to the public One of the most influential thinkers of the twentieth century, Michel Foucault made an indelible impact on Western thought. The first three volumes in his History of Sexuality--which trace cultural and intellectual notions of sexuality, arguing that it has been profoundly shaped by the power structures applied to it--constitute some of Foucault's most important work. This fourth volume posits that the origins of totalitarian self-surveillance began with the Christian practice of confession. The manuscript had long been secreted away, in accordance with Foucault's stated wish that there be no posthumous publication of his unpublished work. With the sale of the Foucault archives in 2013, Foucault's nephew felt that the time had come to publish this final volume in Foucault's seminal history. Philosophically, it is a chapter in his hermeneutics of the desiring subject. Historically, it focuses on the remodeling of subjectivity carried out by the early Christian Fathers, who set out to transform the classical Logos of truthful human discourse into a theologos--the divine Word of a pure sovereign. What did God will in the matter of righteous sexual practice? Foucault parses out the logic of the various responses proffered by theologians over the centuries, culminating with Saint Augustine's fascinating discussion of the libido. Sweeping and deeply personal, Confessions of the Flesh is a tour de force from a philosophical master
